NIGERIA AT 58

NIGERIA

She was made to dance to the rhythms of struggle
Under the icy rain of sorrow
Her tears synchronized her fears
Her reality, her worse nightmare
Days upon days her children cried
Starved under the saboteurs' care, some lost their lives

In anger she arose,
For the wailing of her people continued to grow
Seeds of courage she began to sow
Harvesting bravery in the hearts of her sons and daughters
After years of being unequally yoked with misery
She broke forth into her first solo;
"Nigeria we hail thee"
Her royal apparel Green with white embroideries

Nature kissed her goodluck
Endowing her richly for her journey
From her liquid gold to her fertile soil
Her land did overflow with milk and honey
For a while, she basked in peace and harmony
But drums of war soon sent her running
When the storm was over
She pulled herself together forging ahead

A house divided against itself cannot stand
Her children did not understand
Gunshots were as messages from gongs
Her garment, torn
Dipped in a pool of red
The world laughed as they read
Tribes warring against each other
Corruption of the highest order
Her peace they could not maintain
Yet superiority, they all wanted to attain

Arise o' compatriot
Nigeria calls obey
"Unite and be one," she cries
Take a stand and defend her land
Cover her shame and wipe her daunted reputation
Make her proud and hold her head up high
Let every tongue and tribe come together
Mounting up with wings like super Eagles
Soaring higher and higher above obstacles
That even after 58 years she will continue to wax stronger
And head for brighter days
So help us God!
